Where is Gobindgarh Fort?
The fort can be found on Old Cantt Road, near Vijay Chowk and Lohgarh Chowk. Being located centrally means it is easy to include within any sightseeing plans. It is also close to some other popular places to visit such as the Golden Temple.
Getting there:
- Auto-rickshaw, Taxi and Private Vehicle – The fort can be easily reached using any of these transport methods. Various transport options are available locally.
- Train – The closest main station is Amritsar Railway Station. The fort is a short distance away.
- Air – The Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport serves Amritsar. Once you land you can hire a taxi to get to the fort.

History
Gobindgarh Fort dates back to the 18 th Century. Originally it was built from mud in the 1760’s by Gujar Singh Bhangi, who was a leader of the Bhangi Misl. The Bhangi Misl were one of the Sikh confederacies that had power within some areas of Punjab. This original fort was known as Bhangian Da Qila.
Later the fort came into the hands of Maharaja Ranjit Singh and was expanded and made stronger during the early 19 th Century. The Fort was renamed to Gobindgarh due to Maharaja Ranjit Singh wanting to pay tribute to Guru Gobind Singh Ji, the 10 th Sikh Guru. The fort became a significant military base as it protected the region of Amritsar and the important religious site.
Due to the fort being located close to the historical city it was a useful location for defence and military purposes. It has seen many changes throughout the years, including being part of the Sikh Empire, British Rule and Indian Army. It was not publicly accessible for many years due to being a military site.
Eventually the fort became a public heritage site in 2017. This allows visitors to learn about the rulers, soldiers and events linked to Punjab. It also showcases some of the larger political and military changes throughout the area.
